Marvel’s ‘Echo’ First Reactions: “Dark, Gritty, Violent”

First Reactions for Marvel Studios’ Echo are out, the series is Marvel Studios’ first mture rated project, and promises a gritty emotion filled story with great violence, and action. The series revisits Maya Lopez’ past after her ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown of the Choctaw nation in Oklahoma. The series is also set to mark the return of Charlie Cox as daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, it also stars Chaske Spencer , Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, and Zahn McClarnon who portrayed Maya’s father in Hawkeye

“More Mature” “Fab Action”

What’s on Disney Plus says that the series is more mature, and has lower stakes, while having great fight scenes.

“Marvel remembered it can be violent and dark”

The Digital Fix’s Tom Percival emphasizes how fans of Netflix’s Daredevil will love the show, and especially enjoyed the “dark” and “violent” side of the new Marvel Studios series.

“Incredible fight scene” “Brilliant Alaqua Cox”

Total Film’s Emily Murray praised the series’ “incredible” action and sound design, while highlighting star Alaqua Cox’s performance. She does however note that she found the pacing shaky, but is “Excited to see the rest”.

Paul Klein from Film Hounds Magazine calls the series a “hard hitting action thriller” and praises it’s gritty tone and Native American representation.

“A grounded character driven story”

Tyrell Charles praises Echo and calls it a grounded and character driven story.

Overall the reactions are leaning quite positive with everyone agreeing that the series certainly steps up the violence factor for a Marvel Studios production. Many are comparing the tone, and action to Marvel’s Daredevil show on Netflix which was also TV-MA and featured Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin. The action in the series has been described as “brilliant” “violent” and “incredible”, so it looks like the action is another big positive for the series. Another postive ECHOed by most is that the series certainly feels more grounded and character driven, with lower stakes than other MCU projects. One reaction did find the pacing shaky but ultimately found the first 3 episodes enjoyable, and were excited to watch the rest. Overall there seems to be lots to look forward to with Echo from the violence, to the “brilliant” action, to its grounded, character driven tone, and ofcourse seeing Vincent D’Onofrio reprise his iconic role from Daredevil.
